LBM Method

Most accurate method — if you know your body fat %

1Enter your body fat percentage below. Use a DEXA scan, hydrostatic weighing, or the body fat calculator on this site for an estimate.
2LBM is calculated as: Weight × (1 − BF% / 100). Simple and accurate when BF% is reliable.
3Even an estimated BF% gives a better result than pure height/weight formulas — especially for athletic individuals.

Boer Formula — height + weight only, no BF% needed

1The Boer formula (1984) uses height and weight with sex-specific coefficients to estimate LBM.
2Male: LBM = 0.407W + 0.267H − 19.2  |  Female: LBM = 0.252W + 0.473H − 48.3
3One of the most cited formulas in clinical pharmacokinetics. Accurate for average body types.

No additional measurements needed — using the height and weight entered above.

James Formula — widely used in clinical settings

1Developed for clinical pharmacology and drug dosing. Uses height in metres and weight in kg.
2Male: LBM = 1.1W − 128(W/H)²  |  Female: LBM = 1.07W − 148(W/H)²
3Note: the James formula can underestimate LBM significantly in obese individuals (known limitation).

Note: James formula becomes less accurate at higher BMI. Boer or BF%-based calculation is preferred for overweight individuals.

Hume Formula — older but widely referenced

1Published by Hume & Weyers (1971). Uses weight in kg and height in cm.
2Male: LBM = 0.32810W + 0.33929H − 29.5336  |  Female: LBM = 0.29569W + 0.41813H − 43.2933
3Less accurate than Boer for athletic populations but still widely cited in medical literature.

No additional measurements needed — using the height and weight entered above.

What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass (LBM) is everything in your body that isn't fat: muscle, bones, organs, skin and water. It drives your metabolism and your strength, and for health it matters more than the number on the scale.

Four formulas compared

  • Body fat %: the most accurate if you know your body fat, because it is simply your weight minus your fat mass.
  • Boer: a well-validated formula based on height and weight. It is the default when body fat is unknown.
  • James and Hume: older formulas, shown for comparison.

Why LBM is a better target than weight

Two people can weigh the same and look completely different. When you lose weight, the goal is to lose fat while keeping, or even building, lean mass. That means:

  • strength training 3–4 times a week, with progressive overload;
  • eating enough protein (about 1.6–2.2 g per kg; your LBM-based target is shown above);
  • avoiding very large calorie deficits;
  • sleeping 7–9 hours.

Re-check your LBM every 6–8 weeks. If your lean mass holds steady or rises while your weight drops, your plan is working.
