What BMI tells you

Body Mass Index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. It is a quick screening number used by doctors worldwide: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is the healthy range, 25–29.9 is overweight and 30 or more is obese.

What BMI doesn't tell you

BMI can't tell muscle from fat. A strong, muscular person can show as "overweight" while someone with little muscle and extra belly fat can show as "normal". It also doesn't show where your fat is stored, and fat around the waist carries more health risk than fat elsewhere.

That's why this calculator also asks for your waist measurement. A waist above 102 cm for men or 88 cm for women is linked to higher risk, whatever your BMI.

A note for South Asians

Research shows that people of South Asian background tend to develop metabolic health risks at a lower BMI. Many Indian health guidelines treat a BMI of 23 or more as the point to start paying attention.

Next steps

Use BMI as a starting point, not a verdict. For a better picture, check your body fat percentage and your lean body mass, and track your waist measurement over time.
